Mines and Money spoke to George Fang, Group Managing Director and Head of Mining & Metals (China) from Standard Bank following his presentation at Mines and Money Beijing last week.

Mr Fang took part in a panel that discussed the lessons learned by Chinese investors from foreign resource investments to date so we asked him how this more experienced Chinese resource investor market would use these learnings to approach the next phase of “going global”.

Firstly, he explained that was a sharper focus on quality grade assets than seen before. And in the weakened commodities market, despite their being an appetite for acquisitions, Mr Fang says Chinese investors are being more strategic, pursuing acquisitions that would fill a gap in their current portfolios rather than buying assets purely because they were at a discounted price.

Commenting on the changing profile of resource investors in China, Mr Fang said there was no shortage of private equity funds emerging and that these funds had money to spend when the right opportunities present themselves.

In the interview, which you can watch as a video in full above, Mr Fang also describes current sentiment towards investing in higher risk jurisdictions such as Africa and the selection of financial structures.

Mines and Money Beijing will return in 2014 on June 16-19. For more information, visit the website.
